Musician playing acoustic guitar for worship, illustrating Bible verses about music

The Bible presents music as a gift for worshipping God: it commands God’s people to sing (Psalm 96:1), describes skilled musicians appointed to lead worship (1 Chronicles 15:16), and lists instruments from harps to cymbals (Psalm 150). Music expresses praise, lament, teaching and thanksgiving throughout scripture.

This collection is part of our step-by-step guide on how to write a worship song. Each of these Bible verses about music includes a songwriting takeaway. For more verses to set to music, see our 50 Bible verses for worship songwriting, and for a method to turn a verse into a song, read how to write a song from a Bible verse.

What Does the Bible Say About Music?

Music appears from the early chapters of Genesis to the songs of heaven in Revelation. A few big themes run through it:

  • Music is for praising God. Many psalms call all people, and all creation, to sing to the Lord.
  • Music is commanded, not optional. Scripture repeatedly says “sing,” not just “you may sing.”
  • Skill matters. Scripture values skilled musicians and planned worship.
  • Music teaches. The New Testament links singing with teaching one another the word of Christ.
  • Music fits every season. The Bible includes songs of joy, songs of lament and songs sung in hard places.

Bible Verses About Musicians

Scripture names and describes musicians in surprising detail, especially in the books of Samuel and Chronicles.

Verse (ESV)ReferenceWhat it shows about musicians
“David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy.”1 Chronicles 15:16Worship music was organised and led by appointed musicians
“…whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well…”1 Samuel 16:23Music can bring refreshment and peace
“…it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the LORD…”2 Chronicles 5:13Musicians served together, in unison, as a team
“Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.”Psalm 33:3Skill and practice are part of offering music to God
“And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”Mark 14:26Jesus and his disciples sang together

Bible Verses About Musical Instruments

Psalm 150 is the Bible’s best-known list of instruments. It reads, in part:

“Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!” (Psalm 150:3–6, ESV)

InstrumentWhere it appears (ESV)Modern equivalent (loosely)
LyrePsalm 98:5; 1 Samuel 16:23Guitar-like plucked strings
HarpPsalm 150:3; Psalm 92:3Harp
LutePsalm 150:3; Psalm 92:3Plucked strings
TrumpetPsalm 150:3; 2 Chronicles 5:13Brass
TambourinePsalm 150:4Hand percussion
Strings and pipePsalm 150:4Strings and wind instruments
CymbalsPsalm 150:5; 1 Chronicles 15:16Drums and cymbals

Psalm 92:1–3 also links praise to “the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre” (ESV), and Psalm 98:5 says, “Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody!” For guitarists, it’s encouraging that stringed instruments were part of worship from the start. Bible Verses About Singing in Hard Times

Biblical songs aren’t only for happy days. Some of scripture’s most moving music comes from prisons, caves and nights of distress.

Verse (ESV)ReferenceContext
“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them”Acts 16:25Sung in prison, after a beating
“But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.”Psalm 59:16A song from a time of danger
“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody!”Psalm 57:7A choice to sing while under threat
“And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”Mark 14:26Sung on the night before the cross

Notice that the prisoners in Acts 16 “were listening.” Songs sung in hard seasons can be a witness to others. For songwriters, these passages give permission to write honest songs that name pain while still holding on to God’s strength and steadfast love.

How Can Worship Teams Use These Verses?

These verses aren’t only for songwriters. Worship leaders and teams can use them in several practical ways:

  • Calls to worship. Read Psalm 95:1 or Psalm 100:1–2 aloud at the start of a service before the first song.
  • Team devotions. Read 1 Chronicles 15:16 or 2 Chronicles 5:13 at rehearsal to remind the team that serving together is a biblical calling.
  • Song transitions. Read a verse that matches the next song’s theme, such as Zephaniah 3:17 before a song about God’s love.
  • Encouragement to practise. Psalm 33:3’s call to “play skillfully” is a good reminder that rehearsal is part of worship.
  • Choosing songs. Colossians 3:16 can help a team ask whether a song’s lyrics help the word of Christ dwell richly in the church.

Bible Verses About God Singing

One of the most surprising musical verses in scripture describes God himself singing over his people:

“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17, ESV)

And in Revelation, heaven’s worship is a song that never stops: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8, ESV). Songwriters can draw on both verses: our songs echo God’s own delight and join an eternal song.

How to Study Bible Verses About Music

If you want to go deeper than a list, try this simple study method with any verse above:

  • Read the whole chapter. A verse about joy might sit inside a psalm of lament, and context changes how you sing it.
  • Ask who is singing. Is it one person, the whole congregation, the Levites, creation, or God himself?
  • Ask who the song is for. Some songs are sung to God, others to one another, and some to the nations.
  • Note the instruments and actions. Shouting, clapping, dancing and playing loudly all appear in the Psalms.
  • Write one line in response. Turn what you learned into a short lyric or prayer.
